Infinitas

Emotion Museum — A Möbius Journey Through Grief and Serenity
★ Honorable Mention — Emotions on Display 2022, Archiol Competitions

Project Overview

Emotions are progressive and transitional, but the fast pace of modern life makes people quickly switch between fiercely conflicting emotions, and calm emotions seem to be treated with indifference. Infinitas is a journey through the Möbius space of emotions, guiding visitors to re-experience the transformation of emotions through an architecture that moves beyond polarities.

Design Concept

As a preliminary investigation, we selected the opposing emotions GRIEF and SERENITY from Plutchik's Model of Emotions — the most frequent in people's daily lives. By describing the perceptions, feelings, physiological changes and behaviours of people in these emotional states, we extracted key information from the four main directions of colour, material, spatial form and behaviour.

The design uses a Möbius strip as the spatial organizing principle — a continuous, non-orientable surface where emotions transition seamlessly from one state to another. Visitors enter through spaces evoking grief (heavier materials, darker tones, compressed volumes) and gradually transition to serenity (lighter, more open, with natural light). The architecture itself becomes an emotional regulation device.

Spatial Journey

We guide visitors through this journey via the empty and silent mountains and rocks, beach, ocean landscape, and through natural and artificial light within the interior and exterior spaces. The remote Outer Hebrides landscape becomes an integral part of the emotional narrative — the raw, wind-swept terrain mirroring the emotional states of grief and serenity.

Key spatial moments include:

GRIEF chamber: darker materials, compressed ceiling heights, controlled lighting
Transition zone: the Möbius twist — gradual shift in atmosphere
SERENITY hall: expansive volume, natural light, views to the landscape
Reflection courtyard: open to sky, water element
